[Testing] IVI prints with PVB
over 4 years ago – Tue, Sep 03, 2019 at 11:06:59 PM

Dear IVIers,

Last week, we printed Iron Man Helmet with PVB, which can dissolve easily in alcohol. The model was shared by Martin and designed by scottyboy1129.

As you can see from below pictures, the print quality is flawed, which doesn't meet our expectation. We will spend more time on testing this filament and identity the cause until a better result is achieved. We are not sure yet if it is caused by the filament, the printing settings, or the post-processing method we used. The new result will be shared with you as well.

To polish the model, there are two methods:

1. Put the model into a polishing machine and polish it with at least 70% ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. This might not be feasible for those who don't have a polishing machine;

2. Steam the model with at least 70% alcohol under 80℃ for 2-3 minutes or soak the model into alcohol for 10-20 minutes.

We rubbed the model surface with the abrasive paper and then soaked the model into alcohol for 20 minutes to get the final result.

[Testing] IVI prints with Low-temp Nylon
over 4 years ago – Tue, Aug 27, 2019 at 02:46:17 AM

Dear IVIers,

Last week, we printed Fully 3D-printable wind-up car with low-temp nylon. The model was shared by Martin and designed by Bribro 12.

When printing with the low-temp nylon, we found that it is quite prone to stringing. Stringing is mainly affected by the retraction speed, retraction distance and printing speed. After a few times of testing, we found a setting that mitigated the stringing problem. The printing settings are shared below. Also, when the cooling fans are turned on, it tends to warping and deformation, so we turned the fans on the print head off during this printing.

Below are the printing parameters for this test.

Technique: FDM 3D Printing

Nozzle diameter: 0.3 mm

Printing temperature: 185 ℃

Layer height: 0.15 mm

Printing speed: 30 mm/s

Wall thickness: 0.9 mm

Retraction speed: 90 mm/s

Retraction distance: 6.5 mm

Infill distance: 1.5 mm

Support: No

Cooling system: Yes

L*W*H of the model: 154.7 * 109.7 * 14.7 mm * 2

Printing time: 14h 34m

[Testing] IVI prints with silk silver PLA
over 4 years ago – Tue, Aug 27, 2019 at 01:03:06 AM

Dear IVIers,

We are sincerely sorry for the delayed release of week #07’s print. For week #07, we printed the T800 Smooth Terminator Endoskull with silk silver PLA. The model was shared by bluedragons and designed by machina

It took us a long time testing the print for the following reasons.

1. There were holes on the model;

2. The internal and external surface of the model were intersected;

3. The top and bottom parts of the printer were loosened, resulting in unsatisfying printing quality;

Despite the unexpected problems and extended printing hours, we managed to fix all the above problems and print it.

Below are the printing parameters for this test.

Technique: FDM 3D Printing

Nozzle diameter: 0.3 mm

Printing temperature: 210 ℃

Layer height: 0.15 mm

Printing speed: 30 mm/s

Wall thickness: 0.9 mm

Retraction speed: 60 mm/s

Retraction distance: 6.5 mm

Infill distance: 4 mm

Support: Yes

Cooling system: On

L*W*H of the model: 93.3 * 104.3 * 130 mm

Printing time:30h 30m
